We notice that the figure wears a traditional official's hat. On the back of the hat, we see the dual ribbons which were typical of the Ming official. He carries a court tablet which indicates that he is having an audience with the Emperor. The tablet would have contained a symbol which would have shown the rank of the official. This was necessary to allow the court to keep track of the numerous bureaucrats. One will notice the smooth features of this ivory which is typical of Ming Dynasty carvings. The back of the figure provides evidence that the object was held as the ivory has become stained with oil from human hands. It seems that a smooth, touchable surface was more important to the Ming carvers than copious detail in the figure. The figure curves in the same fashion that an elephant trunk curves. This would allow the artist to get the maximum amount from his medium. The figure is on a carved wooden stand."},{"label":"Title","value":"Ivory carving of Ming official"},{"label":"Rights","value":"Materials available through GettDigital encompass a wide range of works, many of which are in the public domain.
