The shorter man on the far left is likely George B. McClellan (though he was actually a War Democrat) and the disheveled man on the couch represents the South. Published just a couple of weeks prior to the election of 1864, this cartoon mocks the Democrats' platform. Written by Clement Vallandigham, the Democratic platform was based around peace and reconciliation. Ironically this was approach was not supported by McClellan, but the majority sentiments of the party prevailed in the platform's construction. This illustration is commenting on this peaceful approach that is referred to as boring the South back into the Union. Its effectiveness is mocked as the man representing the South yawns upon a comfortable sofa while the surrounding Democrats spout conciliatory lines of peace and reunion. This weak approach by the Democrats was seen by many as being much too yielding towards the South after so many years of hard fought fighting. The inclusion of a donkey in the top left draws on the Democratic mascot as a further way to mock their approach.
