Satsuma is the name of an ancient Japanese province which lies in the southernmost part of the island of Kyushu, Japan. It has become well known among collectors of Japanese ceramics because of the earthenware that was produced there from the 17th to the 20th centuries. Satsuma pottery is distinguished by its cream-colored body that is glazed in a clear but slightly yellowish color and finely crackled into a delicate network. Such a technique was developed during the 18th century. Until the end of the 18th century most Satsuma pottery was simple and plainly decorated. They were primarily used for the traditional tea ceremony. \" Today, however, the name Satsuma is more readily identified with the highly elaborate examples from the late 19th and 20th centuries, where painstakingly detailed enamel decoration covers the surface. (p.6, Louis Lawrence, Satsuma: Masterpieces from the World's Important Collections < London: Dauphin Publishing Limited, 1991). This Satsuma vase with medium and fine crackles is elegantly adorned with enamel decorations. The exterior is primarily decorated with two big gilt cartouches of regal figures in legendary or historical scenes. One cartouche depicts a majestic man playing a shou (a traditional Japanese wind instrument resembling panpipes) surrounded by his wife and sons in a hall full of noble men. On the lower left corner there is a signature in seal script reading, (shuuzan toujiki baku), which was probably the name of the workshop. The other one represents the same regal family members standing in a pavilion near the river bank and looking ahead. They are accompanied by an official who seems to be a tour guide. An elaborate boat is depicted on the upper right corner. The foreground is filled with pine trees. These two big cartouches are connected by two small panels of incised floral designs against a background of lei wen (thunder pattern) patterns. The rest of the exterior is dappled in white enamel. It has one border of light blue beads on the neck, and four more borders of red enamel beads around the shoulders and on the bottom. Above the border of light blue beads is a band of incised wave patterns. Within the two red enamel bead borders around the shoulders are engraved floral designs against a background of lei wen (thunder pattern), while within the other two bead borders on the bottom are incised floral designs also against a background of wave patterns. The interior and the bottom of the base are glazed in yellowish-white and plainly decorated. The bottom rim of the base is unglazed, exposing the cream-colored body."},{"label":"Title","value":"Satsuma vase"},{"label":"Rights","value":"Materials available through GettDigital encompass a wide range of works, many of which are in the public domain.
