The tower sits atop a hill in the Galata district in the area north of the Golden Horn in Istanbul. The medieval stone tower was built by the Genoese in Constantinople (Istanbul) in 1348 to fortify the city, serving as a bastion and a place to hold prisoners. The image shows the cupola that was in place through much of the Ottoman period, when the tower was used as a fire tower, as well as arcades and oriel windows.
