The you chui ping is a type of vessel that was popular during the Kangxi reign of the Qing dynasty. It is often decorated in underglaze blue, famille verte (kang xi wu cai) palette, or in a monochrome glaze. The exterior of this small vase is primarily covered with a thick layer of peachbloom glaze (jiang dou hong). The peachbloom glaze is a family of glaze developed in the Kangxi reign of the Qing dynasty as a result of attempts to imitate red-glazed wares made in the Xuande reign of the Ming dynasty. The color is soft and elegant, like that of peachbloom. Sometimes the color is variegated and there are green mottles in the glaze. The peachbloom glaze on this small you chui ping appears relatively lustrous and dark in color. It is distributed with a considerable number of green mottles. The mouthrim and the bottom of the base are white glazed. The latter contains a reign mark, da qing kang xi nian zhi, meaning, Made during the Kangxi Reign of the Great Qing, in three columns and underglaze blue. The bottom rim of the base is unglazed, exposing the white and smooth body. According to a book titled gu wan zhi nan (Guide of Chinese Antiques) written in 1942 by Zhao Ruzhen, a prestigious modern connoisseur, antique peachbloom vessels are usually covered with a thick and lustrous layer of glaze; however, later copies are thinly and roughly glazed. Green mottles on the antique peachbloom vessels appear glossy, fine and smooth, but green mottles on later copies appear either too green or black. As to this small peachbloom-glazed you chui ping, the glaze seems darker and less soft when compared with several dated Kangxi peachbloom pieces (pp.114, 124 & 126, from Li Zongyang, Ming qing ci qi tu jian. Pictorial Handbook of Porcelain in Ming and Qing Dynasties Changsha: hunan meishu chubanshe, 2004). The green mottles in the glaze are either 'too green' or 'black'. And they seem to be deliberately rendered. When examining the reign mark on the bottom, the writing of 'xi' character is evidently wrong. Its upper right part should be 'si' rather than 'yi'. As far as is known, such an error has not been found on the dated Kangxi vessels yet. Moreover, the writing style of these characters is not as regular and even as the genuine ones. Therefore, it can be inferred that this piece should be a later copy, approximately made during the late 19th to early 20th century."},{"label":"Title","value":"Small peachbloom-glazed you chui ping (oil mallet bottle)"},{"label":"Rights","value":"Materials available through GettDigital encompass a wide range of works, many of which are in the public domain.
