He received very little musical training until the age of eighteen. In 1833, he became a choral director and wrote his first opera, Die Feen, which was only published after his death. In 1839 he moved to Paris, where he enjoyed very little success, due to his hatred of the French musical style. He moved to Dresden in 1842 and enjoyed his first true success in 1845 with Tannhäuser. In 1846 he began work on both the Lohengrin and the tetralogy Der Ring des Nibelungen. The Revolution of 1848 forced Wagner to flee from Dresden and he settled in Switzerland, where he remained for fifteen years working on Der Ring and writing books on musical theory, including Opera and Drama. In 1856, he began work on Tristan and Isolde, which was completed in 1859. In 1860, Wagner returned to Germany and resumed work on Der Ring, the first cycle of which was performed at the Festspielhaus at Wagner's Bayreuth in 1876.
