Around the ring are Abraham Lincoln, Edwin M. Stanton, James Gordon Bennett, Napoleon III, and John Bull. The action occurring inside the ring represents the events of the war. The Union is represented as dogs while the Confederates are mice. Around the edges of the ring sit numerous dead mice while two dead mice in the center say Polk and Stonewall Jackson. Jackson was killed in May 1863 at Chancellorsville, Virginia, while Leonidas Polk died in June 1864, near Atlanta, Georgia. To the right, William T. Sherman has Joe Johnson (actually spelled Johnston) in his mouth, representing Johnston's failure to thwart Sherman's advance towards Atlanta (Johnston would later be replaced by John Bell Hood). To the left is U.S. Grant digging at a pile of dirt labeled Richmond that Robert E. Lee is hiding behind; representing Grant and the Army of the Potomac trapping Lee's Army of Northern Virginia at Petersburg and Richmond. While Lincoln is cheering Grant on, Stanton is objecting to Bennett placing a dog named Little Mac in the ring. Bennett, the editor of the New York Herald, promoted McClellan in the election of 1864 and is trying to place him in the ring, though Stanton retorts that he's been tried, referencing McClellan's prior failures to defeat Lee. To the right are France and Britain represented by Napoleon III and John Bull. While Napoleon III is remarking that Grant is a dangerous fellow, John Bull declares that there is no use in interfering since the game is almost played out. This depicts the Union's victory as inevitable. At the feet of Napoleon III and John Bull is a dog named Max fighting a mouse named Mexico. This is in reference to the puppet regime of Maximilian I that was installed in Mexico by the French."},{"label":"Creator","value":["Beard, Frank"]},{"label":"Date","value":"D:00 M:06 Y:1864"},{"label":"Date Original","value":"June 1864"},{"label":"Title","value":"The \"Situation\""},{"label":"Reference URL","value":"http://cdm16274.contentdm.oclc.org/cdm/ref/collection/p4016coll2/id/1659"}],"description":"The \"Situation\"","sequences":[{"@type":"sc:Sequence","canvases":[{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/gettysburg/iiif/4a5658d6-f30f-48c8-9121-fa28a5312e1a/canvas/_1","@type":"sc:Canvas","label":"The \"Situation\"","height":2862,"width":4016,"images":[{"@type":"oa:Annotation","motivation":"sc:painting","resource":{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/gettysburg/iiif/4a5658d6-f30f-48c8-9121-fa28a5312e1a/full/full/0/default.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","format":"image/jpeg","service":{"@context":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/context.json","@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/gettysburg/iiif/4a5658d6-f30f-48c8-9121-fa28a5312e1a","profile":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/level2.json","tiles":[{"width":1024,"scaleFactors":[1,2,4]}]},"height":2862,"width":4016},"on":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/gettysburg/iiif/4a5658d6-f30f-48c8-9121-fa28a5312e1a/canvas/_1","metadata":[]}],"thumbnail":{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/gettysburg/iiif/4a5658d6-f30f-48c8-9121-fa28a5312e1a/full/500,500/0/default.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","height":500,"width":500}}]}],"thumbnail":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/gettysburg/iiif/4a5658d6-f30f-48c8-9121-fa28a5312e1a/full/500,500/0/default.jpg","logo":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/gettysburg/iiif/logo"}
