The fountain, an octagonal dome on eight columns, was built in Germany and then sent to Constantinople where it was constructed in 1898 to commemorate a visit by the German Kaiser two years earlier. The Obelisk of Theodosius (also known as Obelisk of Thutmose III) and the Walled Obelisk are in the distance on the grounds of the ancient Hippodrome. The Hippodrome arena was constructed under Roman emperors Septimius Severus and Constantine in the 3rd and 4th centuries AD. It served as a center for chariot racing, horse racing, and other entertainment for centuries.
