While the Europeans favored tobacco and made various pipe designs, the Chinese developed containers for their snuff (a powdered tobacco) into an incredible art form. This carving takes the form of a lotus leaf with an upturned rim that functions well as a tiny plate. Thus, the surface of the leaf becomes the outer side of the plate. There are some fine incised lines on the surface of the leaf suggesting its veins. Snuff plates and snuff bottles cannot be dated to a certain period without adequate stylistic analysis. In this case, it is tempting to think of this snuff plate (as affirmed by the dealer) as from the Qianlong period. The art of jade carving in this period reached its zenith of decorative and aesthetic excellence. It is known for its more distinct and exceptional jade craftsmanship than previous eras. Although there is an apparent quality of workmanship in this snuff plate, if one looks at the surface carefully under a good light source, it lacks the softness of the incised lines and the velvety quality of the Qianlong jade carving. It may actually be a recent piece. In fact, after a long period, between 1912 and 1949, with the collapse of the Qing dynasty went the last vestige of national stability essential to any flourishing art form. Any art form was totally forgotten in the struggle to survive. Not until after the revolution of 1949, was there a revival of the arts as part of the Communist program. The old craftsmen with their secrets and abilities had not perished. They were sought after, given workshops, materials, and students to teach, and allowed to revive their arts. So there is no attempt to deceive the collector with these new fine productions into believing that the objects are old. In fact, they are of highest quality and proudly modern. With the waves of tourists and the high demand for Chinese objects from abroad, the newly set up workshops or dealers in Hong Kong and other centers outside China were not necessarily honest. It was only when the objects fell into the hands of the unscrupulous that they were endowed with false antiquity.** * The Chinese call this moss-in-snow jade pattern Hua Hsueh Tai Tsao (Moss entangled in melting snow) because of its appearance of melted snow, frozen and veined with clouds of shaded green. ** (For further information on snuff bottle and the history of snuff and snuff bottle, read Huge M. Moss' Snuff Bottles of China.)"},{"label":"Title","value":"Snuff plate carved into shape of lotus leaf"},{"label":"Rights","value":"Materials available through GettDigital encompass a wide range of works, many of which are in the public domain.
