Everyone could possess more than one. However, the imperial seal functions as an emblem of imperial power and an instrument of succession established from the times of the first empires. This carving is a representative of a scholar's seal. The cluster of animal knob is an example of fine carving with minute detail. It illustrates a blissful scene of a crouching mother Lion dog (also called Buddhist Lion and Fo dog) playing with her two cubs. One squats on her back and clenches his mother's ear. He is determined to pull the other's mane in order to push the latter away from their mother who grins at her small ones. Minute details such as eyes, teeth, paws, muscles, and tails are skillfully and carefully fashioned in fine, deep-cut relief, as an effort toward a realistic depiction of this animated scene. The carving style, very decorative and delicate in structure, is that of the late Qing, when jade carvings were mostly produced for use in the homes of the literati and wealthy patrons. This carving lacks only the most important aspect of the art of the seal: the calligraphic engraving of the legend, generally carved out by the literati themselves. Soapstone is largely found in the southeast provinces of Chekiang and Fukien. It is an art form that began during the Yüan dynasty. The softness of the stone enables scholars to cut the seals themselves with a single-edged knife. There are three aspects of soapstone seals to appreciate: the stone, the carving style of the knob, and the symbolic meaning of the knob."},{"label":"Title","value":"Seal with square base"},{"label":"Rights","value":"Materials available through GettDigital encompass a wide range of works, many of which are in the public domain.
