The color of this piece is not a jewel green, like the other tow, but more on a white or celadon color. This piece is outstanding because it has parts which run into the yellow jade, exquisitely carved, rather lattice like in its delicacy, especially the top, or the cover of the jar, which has a carved bird covered by lotus flower on it. The openwork decoration around the tapering sides is highly decorated. Sprouting lotus stems bearing flowers and leaves rail over the sides and reach the shoulders of the jar. On the dome cover, two lotus stems and flowers arch over a bird, thus making it an unusual cap. The disproportionate combination of the bird legs and the lotus stems somehow creates a sense of confusion. Another long curving and winding stem of lotus serves as the foot of the jar. For Western collectors who look for gem qualities, color and intricate workmanship, it is more rewarding to collect jade carved in modern times such as this piece. Its softly polished quality with some opaque white mottling and pale tan suffusion is certainly attractive. The blurring line between social and stylistic characteristics from the 18th to the 20th century did not mean that any object produced in this period was purely art. In the case of decorative jade carvings, all sorts of crafts like this piece were meant to be exported. The over-decorated relief and compound carving style of this bowl demonstrates the vulgarity of the late Qing, when the art of jade carving started its downward trend due changes in technique to meet the demand of the trading industry."},{"label":"Title","value":"Jadeite jar"},{"label":"Rights","value":"Materials available through GettDigital encompass a wide range of works, many of which are in the public domain.
