These men are drinking wine trying to make good deals with shoddy clothing. One man tries to sell a blanket saying, \"Here Sir! examine that blanket Sir! What could be better than it to protect our volunteers. It is 2 feet 4 inches square - I'll allow 20 per ct - if they are passed. Oh! about the shoes! I admit we have used a leetle wood in the soles!\" The man looking at the blanket says, \"Ahem!! I'll pass 'em.\" A man holding pants explains, \"I assure you sir! The texture of this stuff is fine in fact! Just the thing for our volunteers. The sewing you observe is open for the purpose of ventilation!!!\" The man observing replies, \"Beautiful - how good it will be for our brave fellows.\" A large man in the background says, \"50 per cent did you say let 'em up.\" On the right is a shoddily dressed soldier holding a rifle. His clothes are in rags and he has no shoes. Behind him an officer in bedclothes rides a horse. No matter the consequences, some people constantly tried to profit from the war. By selling shoddy clothing to the government for soldiers at excess prices, the contractors made a great profit. However, their profit turned soldiers into ill-dressed, miserable men."},{"label":"Creator","value":["McLenan, John, 1827-1865"]},{"label":"Alternate Title","value":"\"The blankets served from the State of New York were small in size, bad in texture, and almost rotten, so that you could poke your fingers through them.
