The first soldier says, \"Schofield has whipped Bragg and is moving on Goldsboro!!!\" The second says, \"Sherman has cleaned out South Carolina and is marching on Raleigh!!\" The third says, \"Sheridan is only 10 miles from Richmond!\" Each of these soldiers represents a failed front of the war for the Confederacy. Davis holds a paper that symbolizes the speech he gave at in Richmond to Congress as it is labeled \"Jeff Davis, Richmond\". Therefore this illustration is mocking Davis's attempt a preserving calm contemplation, and is further illustrating the imminent doom of the Confederacy.
