The headdress and clothing contain minimal and simple, rigid lines. The abstract design allows the carver to easily hide the Bhodisattva's hands under her long sleeves. The figurine is extremely willowy and austere. This is a revival style of the Guanyin image towards the close of the Ming Dynasty with ethereal, elongated, sinicizing style. We seldom find jade carvings of the Guanyin. During the Qing dynasty, the Emperor Kangxi had actually to import an image of this goddess from Tibet. However, during the Qianlong reign, we again find some of the finest carvings of Guanyin ever executed. In this carving, she is portrayed with the Luminous pearl; an attribute borrowed from the Goddess Miao-shen*. It may safely be assumed that the carver is actually rendering a combination of Guanyin and Miao-shen, an unusual practice of the carvers of the Qing dynasty. * See Getty A.
