The caption is written in the style of a government resolution representing the political opposition they presented to the Lincoln administration. Here a group of Copperheads are shown tying up Lincoln and trying to stab him, representing their efforts to criticize and sabotage the administration. One of the most prominent Copperheads was Representative Clement L. Vallandingham from Ohio. In May 1863 he prominently stated that the war was not being fought to save the Union, but to free blacks and enslave Southern whites. Such sympathetic statements towards the Southern cause were seen by many Northerners as an embarrassment. Vallandigham was actually arrested in response to this for violating General Ambrose Burnside's General Order No. 38, which made it a crime to criticize the war.
