This is presumably a depiction of Varina Davis, the wife of Jeff Davis. \"Caudle\" was a British hot alcoholic drink, playing upon a common theme of presenting Davis and the Confederates as drunkards. She is stating that she will not go to sleep, instead complaining about the trip to Washington and nice White House promised to her (implying Southern victory). On the contrary, McClellan and the Army of the Potomac sat poised outside of Richmond at the time of this cartoon. In the end, McClellan failed to take the field decisively at the Batlle of Seven Pines outside of Richmond and was pushed off the peninsula during the Seven Days Battles."},{"label":"Creator","value":["Nast, Thomas, 1840-1902"]},{"label":"Alternate Title","value":"(Recently delivered at Richmond, Va., and to be repeated at Danville, N.C.)
