The direction faced is north northwest. Barely visible on Seminary Ridge is the cupola above Pennsylvania Hall, now Schmucker Hall, on the grounds of the Gettysburg Lutheran Seminary. Lee's headquarters was on the back slope of Seminary Ridge, to the north (right) of the seminary. The haystack is like those used in Europe; they are also evidenced in Paul Philippoteaux's Cyclorama painting of the battle.
