The surface is left unadorned. Instead, the attractive marbled texture of the stone hints at an abstract landscape painting. The yellow ochre-green and green hues along with the variations in lightness and chroma (saturation) of the stone attribute to it a watercolor value that creates an ethereal impression. At the lower part of the panel, there is a significant opaque area of calcification, perhaps due to age, suggesting the separation and duality between earth and heaven (the upper translucent part)*. Nephrite offers attractive color tones preferred by the Chinese. The screen is on the original wood stand. It is very difficult to date this small piece because of its unadorned style and interesting use of stone texture as opposed to the common carved table screens. Those of the Qing period are treated as landscape paintings.
