Benjamin \"Beast\" Butler had already participated in many of the events that would define his controversial legacy. In 1861 he refused to return fugitive slaves while stationed in Virginia. In May 1862 he commanded the force that occupied New Orleans where he exerted stern authority to the dislike of many Southerners. In May 1864 the force he commanded was designated the Army of the James and tasked with attacking towards Petersburg from the east while destroying rail lines supplying Richmond. Considering the reputation of Beast Butler, his portrayal as \"A Dove of Peace\" in this cartoon illustrates that the cartoonist was not convinced of any passive pursuit of peace by the Union forces. Though the war was heavily in the favor of the north by this time in the war, there was no misconception by the cartoonist that Union forces would not fight with the same swiftness or audacity."},{"label":"Creator","value":["Unknown"]},{"label":"Date","value":"D:10 M:12 Y:1864"},{"label":"Date Original","value":"1864-12-10"},{"label":"Title","value":"A Dove of Peace"},{"label":"Reference URL","value":"http://cdm16274.contentdm.oclc.org/cdm/ref/collection/p4016coll2/id/190"}],"description":"A Dove of Peace","sequences":[{"@type":"sc:Sequence","canvases":[{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/gettysburg/iiif/31052a2c-3e2b-415f-9af4-4be4bd1088b4/canvas/_1","@type":"sc:Canvas","label":"A Dove of Peace","height":2387,"width":2299,"images":[{"@type":"oa:Annotation","motivation":"sc:painting","resource":{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/gettysburg/iiif/31052a2c-3e2b-415f-9af4-4be4bd1088b4/full/full/0/default.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","format":"image/jpeg","service":{"@context":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/context.json","@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/gettysburg/iiif/31052a2c-3e2b-415f-9af4-4be4bd1088b4","profile":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/level2.json","tiles":[{"width":1024,"scaleFactors":[1,2,4]}]},"height":2387,"width":2299},"on":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/gettysburg/iiif/31052a2c-3e2b-415f-9af4-4be4bd1088b4/canvas/_1","metadata":[]}],"thumbnail":{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/gettysburg/iiif/31052a2c-3e2b-415f-9af4-4be4bd1088b4/full/500,500/0/default.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","height":500,"width":500}}]}],"thumbnail":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/gettysburg/iiif/31052a2c-3e2b-415f-9af4-4be4bd1088b4/full/500,500/0/default.jpg","logo":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/gettysburg/iiif/logo"}
