As the only child he received the best of everything, including education. He studied at Oxford University 1836-1842. After graduating, Ruskin wrote Modern Painters, a five-volume work that took seventeen years to complete. In the work, Ruskin states that art should be true to life, a definition against the accepted rule of the time that art should idealize. The work launched his career in art criticism as well as an author. Ruskin however is also known as a social critic, poet, lecturer, and artist. Ruskin sought to bring social change through artistic change. He wrote about the decline of the quality of art reflecting the decline in society. He was a social activist for the lower classes and condemned the industrial revolution and captialism. He died of influenza in 1900."},{"label":"Creator","value":["Elliott and Fry, London"]},{"label":"Title","value":"Ruskin, John"},{"label":"Part of","value":["Nineteenth Century Notables GettDigital Collection"]},{"label":"Reference URL","value":"http://cdm16274.contentdm.oclc.org/cdm/ref/collection/p126301coll1/id/59"}],"description":"Ruskin, John","sequences":[{"@type":"sc:Sequence","canvases":[{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/gettysburg/iiif/2db3a3c9-34f8-45b1-9211-462544496adf/canvas/_1","@type":"sc:Canvas","label":"GNI_15007a","height":1149,"width":748,"images":[{"@type":"oa:Annotation","motivation":"sc:painting","resource":{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/gettysburg/iiif/c6483b0b-d0aa-4852-9daf-ac81c54398a7/full/full/0/default.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","format":"image/jpeg","service":{"@context":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/context.json","@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/gettysburg/iiif/c6483b0b-d0aa-4852-9daf-ac81c54398a7","profile":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/level2.json","tiles":[{"width":512,"scaleFactors":[1,2,4]}]},"height":1149,"width":748},"on":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/gettysburg/iiif/2db3a3c9-34f8-45b1-9211-462544496adf/canvas/_1","metadata":[{"label":"Identifier","value":"GNI_15007a"},{"label":"Title","value":"Ruskin, John"},{"label":"Description","value":"John Ruskin was born on February 8, 1819 in London and died on January 20, 1900 He is known for his work as a critic of art and society as well as an author, poet and artist."},{"label":"Reference","value":"Reference:John Ruskin: A Life"},{"label":"Reference URL","value":"http://cdm16274.contentdm.oclc.org/cdm/ref/collection/p126301coll1/id/57"}]}],"thumbnail":{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/gettysburg/iiif/c6483b0b-d0aa-4852-9daf-ac81c54398a7/full/500,500/0/default.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","height":500,"width":500}},{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/gettysburg/iiif/2db3a3c9-34f8-45b1-9211-462544496adf/canvas/_2","@type":"sc:Canvas","label":"GNI_15007b","height":1222,"width":737,"images":[{"@type":"oa:Annotation","motivation":"sc:painting","resource":{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/gettysburg/iiif/bd20a69c-7b1b-4562-ada6-e6a452014630/full/full/0/default.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","format":"image/jpeg","service":{"@context":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/context.json","@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/gettysburg/iiif/bd20a69c-7b1b-4562-ada6-e6a452014630","profile":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/level2.json"},"height":1222,"width":737},"on":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/gettysburg/iiif/2db3a3c9-34f8-45b1-9211-462544496adf/canvas/_2","metadata":[{"label":"Identifier","value":"GNI_15007b"},{"label":"Title","value":"Ruskin, John"},{"label":"Description","value":"John Ruskin was born on February 8, 1819 in London and died on January 20, 1900 He is known for his work as a critic of art and society as well as an author, poet and artist."},{"label":"Reference","value":"Reference:John Ruskin: A Life"},{"label":"Reference URL","value":"http://cdm16274.contentdm.oclc.org/cdm/ref/collection/p126301coll1/id/58"}]}],"thumbnail":{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/gettysburg/iiif/bd20a69c-7b1b-4562-ada6-e6a452014630/full/500,500/0/default.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","height":500,"width":500}}]}],"thumbnail":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/gettysburg/iiif/c6483b0b-d0aa-4852-9daf-ac81c54398a7/full/300,300/0/default.jpg","logo":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/gettysburg/iiif/logo"}
