The side depicted on the left is entitled the \"Centrifugal States of North America.\" Centrifugal force is one that separates objects, which in this case would be the Union and may even be a reference to the loose Confederation of Southern states themselves. Below an owl holds a tattered United States flag and a banner saying Ex Uno Plurima, which means \"out of one at the highest price\". A play on E Pluribus Unum, \"out of many one\", that is the motto of the United States, this proposed motto of the Confederacy comments on the high and unfortunate price of secession. One side of the building is supported by the back of a slave, commenting on the Confederacy's dependency on that institution. Adorning both sides of the coin are a pistol and bowie knife respectively, serving as an evaluation of the violent and rash character of the Confederacy. The right side of the coin depicts an unkempt Jefferson Davis pointing a gun at a man who appears to be pursuing diplomatic negotiations. This is inferring that the Confederacy is not a reasonable entity to negotiate with. In the background is the First National Flag of the Confederacy above a field of slaves laboring in the presence of an overseer. The phrase \"Owe Ever Pay Never\" likely refers to not only the immense debt the Confederacy incurred through its economic woes, but the great price slavery and secession has had on the Union."},{"label":"Creator","value":["Unknown"]},{"label":"Date","value":"D:22 M:06 Y:1861"},{"label":"Date Original","value":"1861-06-22"},{"label":"Title","value":"Designs for a New Coin for the C.S.A."},{"label":"Reference URL","value":"http://cdm16274.contentdm.oclc.org/cdm/ref/collection/p4016coll2/id/167"}],"description":"Designs for a New Coin for the C.S.A.","sequences":[{"@type":"sc:Sequence","canvases":[{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/gettysburg/iiif/2b297ef3-0680-403e-9e26-4341f714d051/canvas/_1","@type":"sc:Canvas","label":"Designs for a New Coin for the C.S.A.","height":1514,"width":2811,"images":[{"@type":"oa:Annotation","motivation":"sc:painting","resource":{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/gettysburg/iiif/2b297ef3-0680-403e-9e26-4341f714d051/full/full/0/default.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","format":"image/jpeg","service":{"@context":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/context.json","@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/gettysburg/iiif/2b297ef3-0680-403e-9e26-4341f714d051","profile":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/level2.json","tiles":[{"width":1024,"scaleFactors":[1,2,4]}]},"height":1514,"width":2811},"on":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/gettysburg/iiif/2b297ef3-0680-403e-9e26-4341f714d051/canvas/_1","metadata":[]}],"thumbnail":{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/gettysburg/iiif/2b297ef3-0680-403e-9e26-4341f714d051/full/500,500/0/default.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","height":500,"width":500}}]}],"thumbnail":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/gettysburg/iiif/2b297ef3-0680-403e-9e26-4341f714d051/full/500,500/0/default.jpg","logo":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/gettysburg/iiif/logo"}
