As a guardian against evil spirits, this carving of a crouching Fo Dog has a menacing appearance with a wayward and almost devilish look. Its exceptional power and energy is indicated by a forceful, compact, almost square body, and tensed muscles. Its horned square head turns sideways with a protruding snout, an open jaw, and curled ears flattened back on the head. Slightly modeled in high relief, its bulging eyes, below arched brows, are wide open. His striated corkscrew fan-like tail covers its back. The forepaws align in front of the creature's breast and he rear ones are folded under the body. The greenish color on the right side and head turns rusty-yellowish, probably through the progression of aging jade. The overall distinctive feature of this animal is the deep-coiled grooves that suggest sinews and muscles. The carver of this piece might have taken advantage of a narrow oval pebble to show the snuggling posture.
