Throughout Chinese history, from the Song to subsequent dynasties, a self-conscious reproduction of archaic forms has been a consistent way to record ancient practices and revive the past. Artifacts in ancient forms recovered from tombs of the Southern Song and Yuan periods provide evidence of this approach. During the late Ming period, economic expansion produced an urban class with new demands for luxuries and objects of antiquity as a form of material possession, and not for their spiritual and symbolic values. The jade carvers started imitative works, increasing reproductions of many earlier jade forms of archaic type. This period also showed signs of an unstable and degenerated society. The effect of this change caused the loss of intricacy of decoration that was characteristic of the work of earlier carvers. Small objects like this carving were evidently for the personal enjoyment of the wealthy rather than for use in rituals or burial. This square wine cup derives from the latest form of the bronze vessel ts'ung. Like the contemporary ceramics, this carving is simple and austere in form, but possesses an undoubted grace and strength. The surface is left undecorated. The square shape of the vessel also echoes in the footring. The corners of the vessel are carved in deeply chiseled parallel lines. Archaic miniature vessels like this piece are quite unusual. This carving belongs to a new style, quite distinctive from those seen in previous times. The square and round shapes of bronze and jade vessels often reflected an ancient Chinese thought of \"The heaven is round and the earth is square\" (see object #111 an archaic lian miniature vase)."},{"label":"Title","value":"Square wine cup"},{"label":"Rights","value":"Materials available through GettDigital encompass a wide range of works, many of which are in the public domain.
