The photograph shows two sarcophagi covered in gold-embroidered fabric. The fez of the Sultans rest on the peaked sarcophagi and a large chandelier hangs overhead. The tomb is a large octagonal building constructed in 1840 by architects Mimar Ohannes Balyan and Bogos Dağyan in the Empire style that was popular in Ottoman architecture during the period. Sultan Mahmud II reigned over the Ottoman Empire from 1861-1876, consolidating the Empire and applying Western reforms. He established the cabinet system of government, developed a modern army, established schools and building projects, and introduced western-style dress to the Empire. His son, Abdülaziz I (also Abd Al-Aziz or Abdul Aziz) was Sultan from 1861-1876.
