The Ottomans built fortresses along the straits to hold back invading Byzantium and control the waterways at the narrowest part of the straight. The fortress eventually lost it's strategic importance and, over time, the structure was used for storage and as a prison . The photograph shows a view north along the crenellated fortress wall, probably from the Zaganos Pasa Tower (Zaganos Pasa Kulesi) to the Sarica Pasa Tower (Sarica Pasa Kulesi or Saruca Pasa Kulesi) in the background. The northern Bosphorus straight is visible in the distance.
