Langyao red is a high-fired red glaze from the Jingdezhen kilns when supervised by Lang Tingji 郎廷及, the Governor of Jiangxi, from 1705 to 1712, during the Kangxi reign of the Qing dynasty. Copies of vessels with the Langyao-red glaze were made during the successive Yongzheng and Qianlong reigns. The vase's shape is a typical style of vase from the Kangxi reign of the Qing dynasty. It was produced mainly in the Official Kilns either with monochromatic glazes or with fine underglaze blue decorations. The exterior of this Guanyin vase is crackled. Its upper neck appears to be a pale apple green within a thin layer of Langyao red glaze. With the exception of the mouth rim which is a yellowish white, the interior and the bottom of the splayed footring are glazed in pale apple green and crackled as well, the latter being in a darker glaze. The bottom rim of the footring is unglazed, exposing the white body. The shape of this vase is after the Kangxi model; however, the Langyao red glaze on this piece appears quite light rather than 'as dark as fresh oxblood.' Further, the pale green-glazed upper neck demonstrates that this vase was produced after the Kangxi period because the Kangxi Langyao red-glazed vessels are usually bear a millet yellow top. Moreover, numerous bubbles can be seen in the glaze when observing closely. Therefore, this vase in a Langyao red glaze should be a much later copy, probably produced during the late Qing dynasty.; Kuan Yin; Quan Yin"},{"label":"Title","value":"Langyao red-glazed (lang yao hong) vase"},{"label":"Rights","value":"Materials available through GettDigital encompass a wide range of works, many of which are in the public domain.
