Similar in shape with this piece is the cong. Their forms arose from the ancient Chinese view of the universe that the earth is square and the sky is round. The cong has a form of a square prism enclosing a hollow cylinder, probably a combination of the circular pi and another form that may have been the Chang. Perhaps it was connected to the fertility deities of early Ancestor Worship.* This ts'ung is particularly small and narrow. It does not taper like most other pieces. The main height is divided into six sections; each has a groove. The surface is smooth and has a stroke pattern. The noticeably imperfect drilling of its center, according to Nott, is due to its dual arrangement and opposition (characteristic of heavenly bodies when 180 degrees apart) and undoubtedly embodied an attempt to portray the yin and yang principle of creation. The top aperture is centered whereas the bottom is one off-center. Since this carving functioned as an amulet, it was fastened with a silk cord through its opening. * Nott 1936, pp.13-14."},{"label":"Title","value":"Small jade cong, ritual emblem of Earth"},{"label":"Rights","value":"Materials available through GettDigital encompass a wide range of works, many of which are in the public domain.
