The octagonal tomb is on the left, attached to a wall of the complex on the right. The Çemberlitaş (in English, Colomn of Constantine or Burnt Column), on the far left, was completed by Roman Emperor Constantine in 330 A.D. as part of the Forum in the new Roman capital of Constantinople. The tomb complex was constructed in 1840 by architects Mimar Ohannes Balyan and Bogos Dağyan in the empire style that was popular in Ottoman architecture of the period. Sultan Mahmud II reigned over the Ottoman Empire from 1861-1876, consolidating the Empire and applying Western reforms. He established the cabinet system of government, developed a modern army, established schools and building projects, and introduced western-style dress to the Empire. His son, Abdülaziz I (also Abd Al-Aziz or Abdul Aziz) was Sultan from 1861-1876.
