The glazing on the exterior is remarkably smooth. On the pear-shaped belly there is an inscription as follows: \"ling xiang bai jia tou shang kai. Xi zai ren chen xia yue xie yu tian ya ting pan. Zhongmiao qingyuan zuo.\" The first line of the inscription is hard to understand and decode. The rest of the inscription means: \"once written at the Tianya (literally meaning, \"end of the heaven\") Pavilion on the renchen day of the summer month (it is too vague to know the exact date). By Chumyo Seien.\" It seems that this inscription here is after some Japanese artist's work. The bottom of the footring bears a signature \"Qinzhou (a city name in Guangxi province), Huang Yuanyin (possibly the name of the potter).\" An indistinct red stamp \"CHINA\" is above the signature. As requested by the United States Law (U.S. Stamp Act of 1892), any exported wares to the United States from 1891 were required to be marked with \"CHINA.\" Therefore, it is highly likely that this piece was a vessel specially designed for the foreign trade, and produced approximately during the late 19th to mid 20th century.
