Jefferson was a fourth generation actor, beginning his career at age four peforming \"Jim Crow\" in black face. In Philadelphia he learned comedy from Charles Burke, his half-brother. He first appeared in New York in 1849 with limited success but performances in Our American Cousin gained him notability in 1857. In 1859, he first played Rip van Winkle, for which he is most famous.
