From this position Butler was ordered to employ his Army of the James against Petersburg and Richmond, but his mediocre efforts bogged down in the Bermuda Hundred, east of Richmond. This cartoon is depicting Butler offering wine, grapes, and olives to the South. Though Grant was not fond of the general, Butler's political connections with President Lincoln kept him in command until Lincoln was reelected.
