Beauregard as a flea and Maj. Gen. Henry Halleck and his Union armies as a finger. Following the battle of Shiloh, Halleck slowly manuevered towards Beauregard and Corinth. Having both the Mobile & Ohio and Memphis & Charleston railroads, Corinth was an important Southern junction. By late May 1862, Halleck was closing in on Beauregard. Beauregard fled the battleground on the night of May 29. Using false intelligence to convince Halleck of a Union assault, Beauregard instead kept fires burning as well as buglers and drummers playing while the army slipped out stealthily in the night.
