It is cream in color although most of the glaze has worn off. Some red marks on figure's chest and arms indicate that the piece may have been painted at one time. The figure has a simplified face and two buns above the head. Its arms are crossed over the chest concealing the hands. The figure wears a long robe down the lower leg. The trousers it wears are quite loose. Its shoes seem to be pointed. This figure may have served as a burial object in some tomb. The donor, Mr. Price Rogers, originally dated this pottery figure to the Song dynasty; however, many aspects of this piece seem suspicious. First of all, there is no detailed information about the source of this figure. In this case its authenticity is problematic. Second, the hair style is not of the Song period. When looking through figure paintings of both the Northern Song and Southern Song periods, female servants at that time wore either one bun above the head (married) or two buns down the ears (unmarried). Third, this figure exposes its lower legs and feet, a practice which was anti-Confucius in ancient China, especially during the Song dynasty when the study of Confucius reached its zenith. Women at that time usually wore long robes that covered their legs and feet, as evidenced by a number of Song figure paintings as well as extant Song costumes. Last, this figure's face seems odd. It seems different from the depiction of common female appearance during the Song period. In conclusion, because of its unknown origin, non-Song hairstyle, questionable robe and odd face, this pottery figure should not be a Song piece as claimed by the donor. To get an exact dating of this piece, some scientific work may be required."},{"label":"Title","value":"Small, hollow pottery figure of a female servant"},{"label":"Rights","value":"Materials available through GettDigital encompass a wide range of works, many of which are in the public domain.
