Pope brought a very confident and arrogant demeanor with him from his previous experience in the western theater. His actions and an infamous message to his new army regarding the changes he wanted in the east (presented along the lines that the eastern armies were lacking in their approach and resolve in battle) were rather offensive to many eastern soldiers. One of the elements he emphasized was the reduction of supply lines. This cartoon is mocking the corresponding order that Pope gave charging the troops to obtain rations on the march (from the Virginia countryside) by portraying advancing Union soldiers with oversized cooking implements. This is not only emphasizing the distracting effect that this order may have had on the soldiers of the Army of Virginia, but also comments on the image it gave the army as they advanced through Northern Virginia stripping the countryside of provisions. Pope's arrogance and audacity would soon fall short at the end of August 1862 when he was thoroughly defeated by the Army of Northern Virginia under Robert E. Lee at the Second Battle of Bull Run."},{"label":"Creator","value":["Unknown"]},{"label":"Alternate Title","value":"Regimental Order No. 17,643, Army of Virginia. \"The Troops will all carry Cooking Utensils, but no Rations; they will provide themselves with something to cook as they march.\""},{"label":"Date","value":"D:02 M:08 Y:1862"},{"label":"Date Original","value":"1862-08-02"},{"label":"Title","value":"Quartering of the Enemy"},{"label":"Reference URL","value":"http://cdm16274.contentdm.oclc.org/cdm/ref/collection/p4016coll2/id/131"}],"description":"Quartering of the Enemy","sequences":[{"@type":"sc:Sequence","canvases":[{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/gettysburg/iiif/0a61ef56-5b08-497f-ae3d-b43cc0143624/canvas/_1","@type":"sc:Canvas","label":"Quartering of the Enemy","height":2538,"width":2320,"images":[{"@type":"oa:Annotation","motivation":"sc:painting","resource":{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/gettysburg/iiif/0a61ef56-5b08-497f-ae3d-b43cc0143624/full/full/0/default.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","format":"image/jpeg","service":{"@context":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/context.json","@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/gettysburg/iiif/0a61ef56-5b08-497f-ae3d-b43cc0143624","profile":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/level2.json","tiles":[{"width":1024,"scaleFactors":[1,2,4]}]},"height":2538,"width":2320},"on":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/gettysburg/iiif/0a61ef56-5b08-497f-ae3d-b43cc0143624/canvas/_1","metadata":[]}],"thumbnail":{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/gettysburg/iiif/0a61ef56-5b08-497f-ae3d-b43cc0143624/full/500,500/0/default.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","height":500,"width":500}}]}],"thumbnail":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/gettysburg/iiif/0a61ef56-5b08-497f-ae3d-b43cc0143624/full/500,500/0/default.jpg","logo":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/gettysburg/iiif/logo"}
