The handle and the vase itself were cut from the same piece of jade and there is no break anywhere. The handle cannot be removed without breaking it! This small and thin vase owes its shape and decoration to the archaic bronze ritual vessel known as the Yu, a vessel that was reserved for altar use, and that served as the utensil in which the libation wine was heated on the altar for the use of the officiating priests. The vase and cover was cut from one piece and sits on a wood stand. The neck of the vase has a band in the stylized cicada motif. Below this is a low relief band with two stylized Fêng Huang (phoenix) facing head to head. A band of design around the foot of the vase is enclosed by a low relief pattern. There is a T'ao T'ieh mask known as the Hu (Tiger) at the lower belly of the vase. The vase is suspended by two ring holes at the end of the U-shaped handle which is cut from the same piece of jade."},{"label":"Title","value":"Kangxi white jade hanging vase"},{"label":"Rights","value":"Materials available through GettDigital encompass a wide range of works, many of which are in the public domain.
