Ellet is known for his groundbreaking work with suspension bridges. After the outbreak of the Civil War, Ellet was anxious to serve the United States war effort. He had ideas for a steam battering ram as well as ambitions to lead soldiers and oversee engineering endeavors. However, his overtures were ignored by the General-in-Chief and fellow engineer, George B. McClellan. Angry at the rejection, he sent a letter to the New York Times berating the leadership of McClellan, which would be followed up by the pamphlet, The Army of the Potomac and its Mismanagement. This depiction is rather critical of Ellet and his methods, coloring them as shameless and petty."},{"label":"Creator","value":["Stephens, H. L.
