The tiger entered the repertoire of ancient jade carving at about the same time as the dragon. Although the shape of the animal is very confusing, the letter wang confirms the animal as a tiger. The object consists of two identical split pieces that form the profile of a tiger. Both carry the character tong, a deep-cut relief on one side and a raised-relief on the other, so that the two pieces fit together as a complete piece. The character is surrounded by small incised characters indicating the military status of a general and the name of his appointed post. The tiger is very compressed with its front legs slightly raised and its back legs bent. Its tail is coiled backward and hidden under its rounded and short body. A fine, long narrow snout suggests a closed jaw. High relief lines on the animal's body suggest that its stripes were probably copied from Shang pieces and stylized in a more realistic fashion. There is a small hole pierced through the end of the jaws, where a string could be inserted. Small animal carvings used as personal ornaments form one of the principal categories that originate from the Shang and Zhou periods. Based on the style and use of the stone, the date of this piece could possibly range from the late Ming to Qing period."},{"label":"Title","value":"Tiger (consists of two split pieces)"},{"label":"Rights","value":"Materials available through GettDigital encompass a wide range of works, many of which are in the public domain.
