The Roman Agora was an open, rectangular court surrounded by colonnades. An agora is an open space, sometimes surrounded by buildings and stoai (porticos supported by columns), where people gathered, particularly for political functions. Near the center of the photograph stands the Tower of the Winds (also known as the Horologion), an octagonal tower of Pentelic marble constructed by astronomer Andronikos of Kyrrhos (also Andronicus of Cyrrhus) in the 1st century BC. The tower features a water clock, sundials, and a wind vane. Reliefs representing the eight winds are at the top of each of the eight sides.
