Floyd and Pillow did not want to be captured, fearing great repercussions against them. They escaped and left Buckner to surrender to Grant's surrounding army. When he did, Grant gave him no terms except for the unconditional surrender of the entire Rebel force. The image shows Pillow as a fluffy white pillow and Floyd as an upright cannon running away to Nashville, Tennessee.
