In January of 1822 slave owner Barbara Wilson of Bath County, VA freed 4-year-old Betsy. The case surrounding this document is probably one of the most bizarre in the history of U.S. slavery. As a child, Barbara Wilson and her family of Irish immigrants, were attacked by Indians in the Shenandoah Valley, a brutal beating that gave her severe brain trauma.\nDecades later, Wilson was left with slaves and decided to free them, including Betsy. The slaves were biracial but she listed them as \"White\" hoping that particular racial classification would grant them easier access in life after slavery. Wilson's family said she was insane due to the Indian attack, objected to freeing of the slaves and tried to overturn the freedom process. Her family won and re-enslaved the group. But after 14-years of legal wrangling the slaves eventually won their freedom back and were emancipated.
