Gove, 1838, slave owner, arrested in Boston. Missent & forwarded. How panic of 1837 affects cotton market.\nTwo years earlier, on October 15, 1836, Asa D. Gove was arrested in Boston, and charged with holding a negro girl against her will, with the intention of sending her into slavery.\nGove had brought a slave girl with him north, and had left her at his brother's house in Boston. He was after charged with threatening to send a \"free\" person into slavery, as in coming into Massachusetts, the girl was considered a free person.\nThe case was settled (to an extent) in finding that as a free person, no one can be sent anywhere against their will. It was not based on her being a slave, and then free, she was simply being granted the liberties of a free person in Massachusetts.\nBut as there was not sufficient evidence to prove Mr. Gove intended to force her to go back to New Orleans, the charges were dismissed.\nStill, a landmark case, in regards to future movements of blacks north to escape slave states.
