Also signed by 2 Justices of the Peace certifying that the document was written and signed by Watkins.\nWatkins became involved in a legal contest for ownership of a wench named Jude, one of a group of family slaves \"gifted\" by his grandfather to his mother. At issue was whether the slaves had been legally transferred to his father, a ne'er-do-well who had remarried after his mother's death, and had sold them to pay his debts.\nThe deposition offers a revealing insight into Dr. Watkins himself, confidant of two Presidents, who had once virtually fled from his practice in Nashville, where he had met Andrew Jackson, after being accused of forging the will of a female patient to enrich himself. This was the man Thomas Jefferson commended to James Madison as \"excellent, well informed, of pleasant conversation and of great worth\", a Doctor whom \"I should trust... with more confidence than anyone I have ever known...\" whom Jefferson credited with the restoration of my health.\" Watkins also wrote long letters of political commentary to both men. Watkins had met Jefferson after treating his grandson, manager of Monticello, when he had been shot by his alcoholic brother-in-law. And he had just reconciled with Jackson after their falling out over Watkins' sympathy for a drunken horse-breeder Jackson had killed in a duel. Jackson, considering a presidential bid was happy to make up with the Doctor, who now offered to sell the General a favored manservant and a \"likely young woman slave 16 years old*, and to buy as many Blacks as Jackson might need\n\"upon the best terms\" for which \"they could be had.\"\nThe deposition narrative itself has the elements of 18th century fiction - the ambitious young man with a rich mother who had intended \"hiring out* her slaves to pay for his Classical education, but, after her death, found himself condemned to years of \"hard labor\" to support his father's\n\"fallen fortunes\".
