To Samuel Townsend. \n\nThe partially blind slave girl mentioned in this letter was named Jane, born in 1817, who had only \"one eye\". Why she was left with Jordan, not a doctor but a semi-literate farmer, is unknown. It was not uncommon for slave-owners to protect their \"property investment\" by seeking medical care for their slaves, but in Townsend's case, his solicitude may have been more personal. When unmarried Alabama cotton planter Samuel Townsend died in 1856, his relations, and Southern society in general, was shocked by his will, leaving the equivalent of a million-dollar estate to his biological children - five sons, four daughters and two nieces, - who were also his emancipated slaves. Jane was not one of those fortunate descendants (Professor R. Isabela Morales recently published a biography of Townsend and his multi-racial family, \"Happy Dreams of Liberty\" which identified Jane). The will was hotly contested, but after four years of litigation, just before the Civil War began, it was held to be legally valid.\n\n\"... The sight of one eye will sustain a considerable injury, and the inflammation has mainly left the other one, her appetite is now good and her general health is fast improving. I expect to leave her on a visit to Jonesoboro by which time your girl will be able to travel and it would be desirable both on your own account and the girls that you come after her by that time...\"\n\nThanks to Professor R. Isabela Morales, who recently published a biography of Townsend and his multi-racial family, \"Happy Dreams of Liberty\", we've been able to identify a young Black woman, listed in the inventory of his estate,"},{"label":"Archival Location","value":["FOUNDATION ARCHIVES ROOM"]},{"label":"Subject Theme","value":["Slavery, Abolition & Emancipation"]},{"label":"Decade","value":["1830"]},{"label":"State_Name","value":["Alabama"]},{"label":"Document Theme","value":["Personal Writings"]},{"label":"Major Theme","value":"Race, Slavery & Social Order"},{"label":"Accession Number","value":"1835.AL.2022.004"},{"label":"Copyright Statement","value":["May be subject to copyright protection.
