He is very anxious for you to buy him.\" Hardeman was offered $350, but will sell Bill to Mrs. Evans, thereby reuniting Bill with his wife, if she will match the offer. Interesting letter showing how slaves were pro-active in their efforts to recapture the family unit broken apart by the auctioneer's hammer. 2) Receipt for the sale of \"a negro girl named Lisa Black\" for $1,000, dated January 2, 1854. 3) Grand Jury indictment printed and manuscript document, Lawrence County, Alabama, Fall Term 1858, charging Stephen Gibson with selling liquor to slave Jeff \"without an order in writing signed by the overseer or master of said slave, specifying the quantity to be sold, given or delivered.\" Docketed on verso. 4) Probate document, Marion District, South Carolina, February 6, 1834, certifying that James Speer sold three negroes for $875 on behalf of the heirs of James Bethea, deceased, for \"a division\" (backed with rice paper). 5) Stampless cover, St. Louis, Missouri, November 7, 1850 from one attorney to another concerning a referral fee to gain possession of some promissory notes and an offer by a client to \"take the Negro man Peter at $600 which is more than the appraised value by $100 provided he is delivered to him and is in sound condition.\" Other slaves will likely be purchased at the present evaluation \"for the balance of the judgment.\" Some discoloration from old tape repairs. 6) Very late war-date probate court document, Sumter County, Alabama, certifying that the estate's administrator sold personal property at auction, including a negro boy named Jeff for $4,100, on April 7, 1865, two days before Lee's surrender at Appomattox."},{"label":"Creator","value":"B.
