On Owen's advice, Summer was publishing his speeches and writings in set of 20 volumes....\nSummer had often spoken of the slavery conflict in Kansas, once with nearly fatal consequences. In 1856, after speaking on the Senate floor about the slavery battle in Kansas, Summer had been attacked by a South Carolina Congressman, who beat him nearly to death with a cane.
