All return correspondence and photographs are believed to have been destroyed when the Allied transport ship Roy was aboard was sunk by a German missle. The survivors, Roy included, were lost at sea for two to three days. In 1945, Roy returned to the United States. Very little memorabilia or ephemera remain due to Winnie's rapidly progressing illness and hospitalization in her early 30s. Roy rarely spoke about his experiences after the war. The couple died at a young age. The scrapbook pages that are used in this book represent Winnie's voice during the years that Roy was gone.
