The back of the photo reads: “El Mina Shrine Temple,” as the occupant at the time the image was taken in the 1940s. The three-story Victorian Italianate mansion was erected in 1859, using enslaved labor. It was owned by a Confederate supporter and served as the Confederate Army headquarters during the Civil War. The grounds host ongoing commemorations, including reenactments of General Order No. 3-a historic military decree issued by Union Major General Gordon Granger on June 19, 1865, at this site.
