'Till some sort of a sport, a friend as he thought, induced him to go to the track. And he's been going down ever since, he loses much more than he wins, He's nearly dead broke, his things are in soak, he swears that they're blackguards and skins, But he goes ev'ry day, does poor Mac, he's trying to get it all back, His watch is up the spout, and his place is sold out, Since McManus goes down to the track. Ev'ry \"tout\" knows McManus from here to Gowanus, and give him good things ev'ry day, But somehow its funny, when he puts up his money its sure with the \"bookies\" to stay, They told him to play \"little Minch\" for a \"sinch\" but she sulk'd and she finishd way back Ev'ry horse that he bets on, gets left at the post, since McManus goes down to the track. But he keeps going down just the same, he knows its a dead loosing game, His pants hang in fringes, playing cast iron cinches he's lost ev'ry thing but his name, When he flush, he goes down in a hack, but he usually walks coming back, He can't get a square deal, or enjoy a square meal, Since McManus goes down to the track. He has tried ev'ry system, play'd on his own wisdom, and sporting men's tips by the score, Then he follow'd a jockey whose record was rocky, and he went in the soup more and more, Then to pull out, he thought, he'd play newspaper tips, and he figured them for a week back, They averaged five winners, but had none the day, that McManus went down to the track. But he keeps going down, does his jags, he dreams of the Guttenberg nags, In rain hail or snow, he's certain to go, he'll never quite till he wears rags, Like ev'ry true sport white or black, he swears off, then takes it all back, When he puts down a bet, his horse it drops dead, When McManus goes down to the track.
