Its left, the Works of Yorktown, consisted of a formidible field owrk (thickness of parapet 15 to 18 ft-relief 20 to 30 ft.) with Water Batteries which joined to those of Gloucester Pt, closed York River.  Only 2500 yards from this fort began a series of inundations to tidewater from the James.  They were caused by dams upon Warwick River, the right bank of which was strongly held by lines of trenches with occasional redoubts and batteries,  The inundations were deep, continuous and effective.  the interval between htem and Yortwon was defended by two redoubts and many complex lines of trenches commanding difficult ravines.  The Rebel armament included about 80 guns of heavy calibre (captured at evacuation) and numerous field batteries.  This plan shows about half the line, including the point of attack.  The Rebel works are laid down from reconnaissances made immediately after the evacuation and are correctly, but very incompletely, represented owing to want of time for sketching minor details.
