They caught him on a cloudy night behind old Jackson's barn, He had a bag of chickens and a melon in his arms, Like a steamboat he was snoring his eyes were shut down tight When they jabbed him with a pitchfork then he yelled with all his might. They notified this sleepy coon Darktown he'd have to leave He \"flew the coop\" but left behind his wife and child to grieve But he couldn't lose his Hannah she located him one day Living on the European plan with a \"babe\" not far away. She had him up before the Judge, but on the book he swore He's never laid his eyes upon that \"yallar gal\" before Then Hannah held the infant up, cried \"he's yours, you can't deny\" The resemblance was so striking, poor Jones said with a sigh.
